WEVV finally back on the air

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

After 24 days of no analog signal from Channel 44, WEVV is finally back on the air. They were off from 2/12 to 3/7. Of course most viewers had no idea since the metro cable penetration is so high. I’m sure the handful of those still watching via over-the-air antenna were pitching a fit… and I’m sure they’ll pitch an even bigger fit when all the analog gets shuttered in less than a year’s time.

We were able to learn that WEVV’s new analog transmitter is actually a hybrid so that it can act as a backup digital transmitter after the analog goes dark next February.

Here’s wishing the station some good technical luck during the upcoming NCAA tournament. There’s nothing worse than fired up basketball fans who can’t see their game.

WEVV still off the air

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

WEVV’s analog channel 44 continues to be off-the-air since the first of the ice storms a couple weeks back. (Most viewers probably didn’t even notice since cable and satellite services were largely unaffected.)

We finally learned from their engineering staff that the analog transmitter went down in a cloud of smoke and soot and is being replaced this week. They hope to have a signal back up by late Friday, if all goes well. But given the luck they have with all matters technical, I wouldn’t hold my breath.
